Day Two

Daylight Savings Time happens. Sigh.

By 11:00 we walked the few feet inside to "church" at the sanctuary here at National Memorial Baptist. The stained glass (See pix below.) are historic, both in their vibrant colors, and in their depictions of Baptist emphases on mission. Two are of foreign missions of the American and Southern Baptist denominations; two depict home missions. I love the one emphasizing Religious Liberty.

Worship was a two-hour affair that no one seemed to mind. At its beginning we 19 visitors were a large majority of those gathered. By the end, a large minority. Pastor Kasey Jones commands a compelling experience. She talked about "extending the network" as a cell phone company might, and how the gospel is both a "heart fixer" and a "mind regulator".

After a quick lunch provided by Tommy Justus (thank you, Tommy!) we boarded a subway for the Holocaust Museum. For a full half of us it was our first subway experience, and for nearly all the first Holocaust confrontation. We broke up into groups of three or more to get back to the church for dinner, and ended the night with some serious reflections on the day.

From Travis
Big questions today.  A time of worship with a truly authentic and open community was coupled with two hours at the Holocaust Museum where we experienced anguish and suffering unimaginable.  How can those two things possibly live in the same world?  Tonight,  an hour and a half long reflection led us to ask one another "What is your truth?"  Can it get any bigger?  I'm humbled by this group.  I love the world, even when and where it's broken.  -Travis
